Disciples of Christ

Western Hills Christian Church is part of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).  We got our start in the United States in the early 1800s, shortly after the Revolutionary War.

At that time, the United States was largely a frontier country with several church denominations but few churches.  The different denominations were so divided that Christians from different traditions would not worship together or share in the Lord's Supper together.  Thomas Campbell, one of our four major founding fathers, was a Presbyterian minister who hoped to change that.  One Sunday, he offered the Lord's Supper to all who believed that Jesus was the Christ, regardless of the church to which they belonged.  He was "called on the carpet" by his branch of the Presbyterian church and directed to discontinue this practice.  He started a Christian Association that was to become one of several pieces that would evolve into the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).

We believe that we are "Christians only, but not the only Christians."  From the earliest beginnings, the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) has recognized that there are many Christians and we do not have to agree on every point of doctrine, but work together to the glory of one God.
